WHO ARE WE ?We are a specialised centre for education and rehabilitation of children and adolescents with motor impairments or chronic illnesses. WHAT IS HABILITATION?Habilitation in ZUIM means primarily education; however it also comprises medical therapy and rehabilitation and the development of other areas, which are important for life. Our goals are to achieve a suitable educational level, positively influence the medical condition and achieve the highest possible level of independence and effectiveness in physical, intellectual and social functioning within the individual’s capabilities. The measurement of our success is to be found in the quality of life attained. WHEN IS ADMISSION TO ZUIM INDICATED?The “Committee for guidance” decides which educational programme is most suitable for each individual. The professionals, who comprise this committee, assess where a child with a motor impairment or illness has such special educational and other needs that they cannot be adequately met in regular schools. In such cases, it is necessary to weigh up the advantages which admission to ZUIM can offer:
WHO IS INVOLVED AND HOW DOES HABILITATION WORK?The interdisciplinary team the so – called “operative team” comprises: tutor, teacher, doctor, nursing sister, nursing assistant, assistant, physiotherapist, occupational therapist, speech therapist, psychologist and social worker. The members of the team, together with the child or adolescent and his parents, set desired goals and decide on the ways to work together to achieve these. An individualized programme is prepared for every child, taking into account his specific needs. This programme is continually monitored and, if necessary, modified. WHAT ELSE DO WE OFFER?We are aware that today more and more children with motor impairments attend regular schools in their local area. With our knowledge and invaluable experience we can help to ensure that these children will really receive an education that is modified according to their needs. Through our community team we offer children additional special education assistance and other therapy treatments, assist the school in the preparation and implementation of individualized programmes and offer assistance to parents. We organize and provide education for all, who are involved in the education process of children with motor impairments. OUR ACTIVITIES
